UGS Brzeźnica

The Underground Gas Storage [UGS] Facility Brzeźnica is located in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship, in the commune and district of Dębica. It is situated within the Sandomierz Basin, in the region of the Lower Wisłoka Valley which borders on the Tarnów Plateau to the south, on the Kolbuszowa Plateau to the east, the Vistula Lowland to the north and the Subcarpathian Urstromtal and the Carpathians to the south.

Information about the storage facility

First year of UGS operation: 1979

Working volume 100 [million m³] 1126,0 [GWh]
Maximum injection capacity 1,44 [million m³/day] 16,2 [GWh/day]
Maximum withdrawal capacity 1,44 [million m³/day] 16,1 [GWh/day]

Information about the storage facility

Key parameters of the storage reservoir:

Average effective thickness of reservoir rock 8,70 [m]
Average geophysical porosity of reservoir rock 20,60 [%]
Average geophysical permeability of reservoir rock 270,90 [mD]
Original static bottom-hole pressure in the reservoir horizon 4,21 [MPa]
Average depth of the reservoir horizon top 394 [m]

The Brzeźnica high-methane natural gas field was discovered in 1966. The gas in place reserves were assessed to amount to 203 million m3. The production from the field began in 1970 and was discontinued in 1979 in view of the decision to develop the UGS facility. The depletion rate was 67.5 %. The natural gas reservoir is located in a sandstone series within Miocene formations of the Carpathian Foredeep. In the basal part, the gas zone of the reservoir is supported by edge/underlying formation water. The storage reservoir is sealed by shales both from the top and from the base part.
